Discovering Brussels: A Blend of Cultures and Laid-back Vibes

When I first arrived in Brussels, I must admit, I hadn't even heard much about this city until a few weeks prior. Contrary to my experiences in Bordeaux and Paris, Brussels has a distinct old-world charm that sets it apart. However, I soon found myself captivated by the place.

I'm currently staying in an area that is conveniently close to all the amenities I need—shops, cafes, and restaurants are just down the block. What immediately caught my attention was the diversity of cultures coexisting side by side. I've encountered many different languages so far, but the majority of people here can also communicate in English, which is a pleasant surprise.

Contrary to what I had heard about Europeans harboring negative feelings towards Americans, I found the people of Brussels to be welcoming and open to different influences. The music played in shops and cafes reflects this too, featuring not only pop but also a mix of American classics spanning from 80s pop to 90s rap and yacht rock.

Perhaps one of the most noticeable cultural differences here is the more relaxed approach to life. Meals are savored with leisure, and midday breaks are spent at cafes, soaking in the moment. The pace has rubbed off on me, and I now find myself appreciating the little things and embracing more things in the moment. Even while walking around the stores, there's no mad rush—everyone seems to be taking their time.

Belgium has a reputation for its excellent beer, and Brussels doesn't disappoint. I've tried several local beers, and each one has been fire. Whenever I'm at a bar or restaurant, I prefer to leave my choice to the server, and they never disappoint with their selections.

Meeting people from Brussels and neighboring European countries, like the Netherlands, has been eye-opening. I've discovered that a lot other Europeans view Parisians in the negative light that I was told that they held towards Americans—quite the contrary!

Of course, I couldn't come to Brussels without trying their famous Belgian waffles and fries. While I'm not a fan of sweets, I must admit the waffles were pretty good, especially the ones with chocolate and caramel toppings. As for the Belgian fries, they lived up to the hype! Even at 6 am, they were a delicious treat, especially when paired with a spicy sauce.

Overall, Brussels has been a pleasant surprise, exceeding my expectations in every way. Its blend of cultures, friendly atmosphere, and delectable food and drinks have made me feel right at home. I'm looking forward to the rest of my time here, embracing every moment and immersing myself in this unique city.
